May 21, 2017, the American Indian Scholarship Fund of Southern California (AISFS) awarded its premiere scholarship in memory of Sandy Franks to Itati Ortega, a John F. Kennedy High School graduate currently attending Los Angeles Mission College.

Sandy Franks, through the Title VI American Indian Education Program of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), devoted her energy and life to improving educational opportunities for Native American Indian and Alaskan Native students. Stony Flores, the grandson of Sandy Franks,
represented the Franks family at the award ceremony and joined in the drum for the honor song in Sandy Franks memory.

All Native high school seniors are encouraged to apply for the Sandy Franks scholarship in early April. An application form can be found on this website.
